UMOJA OF AFRICA FOUNDATION is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting, supporting, and empowering African immigrants, refugees, and families. “Umoja” means “unity” in Swahili, and unity is at the heart of everything we do.
We create a welcoming community where people from diverse African cultures can connect, preserve their heritage, support one another during times of celebration and hardship, and build successful lives in the United States. Through education, youth mentorship, cultural programs, digital literacy, leadership development, and access to essential resources, we help individuals and families overcome challenges and reach their full potential.
We believe that when we stand together, share our knowledge, and care for one another, we build a stronger community and a brighter future for generations to come.

Board of Directors
Omary Zakwani
Omary Zakwani is the Founder and Executive Director of UMOJA OF AFRICA Foundation. He established the organization with a vision of bringing Africans together, strengthening relationships among families, and creating a trusted support system for immigrants and refugees living in the United States.
As Executive Director, Omary oversees the organization’s daily operations, program development, community initiatives, and long-term growth. He works with the Board of Directors to transform UMOJA OF AFRICA’s mission into meaningful programs that respond to the educational, cultural, social, and economic needs of the community.
Omary also represents the organization in meetings with community leaders, partner organizations, supporters, and potential funders. He develops partnerships that expand opportunities for African immigrant families and ensures that the organization’s programs remain accessible, relevant, and responsive.
Through his leadership, Omary encourages people from different African countries and cultural backgrounds to work together as one community. He is committed to supporting families during difficult times, celebrating their accomplishments, preserving African cultures, empowering young people, and creating opportunities for future generations.
IBRAHIM KABONGO
President and Board Chair
Ibrahim provides strategic leadership and governance oversight. He chairs board meetings and works with the Executive Director to ensure that the organization’s goals remain aligned with its mission and the needs of the community.
ESTER ZAGABE
Treasurer
Ester oversees the organization’s financial accountability. She reviews budgets, monitors financial activities, prepares reports for the board, and supports responsible decision-making, transparency, and long-term sustainability.
PASCAL MATABISHI
General Secretary
Pascal maintains important organizational records, including meeting minutes, bylaws, and compliance documents. He also supports board communication, fundraising, proposal development, community outreach, and program visibility.
Enock Mangaiko
Board Member
Enock contributes to governance and strategic planning while serving as a connection between the organization and the community. He supports fundraising, program evaluation, and culturally responsive initiatives representing the needs of families and young people.
